Matthew Remski is the author of eight books, the most recent being Practice and All is Coming, Cult Dynamics, and Healing in Yoga and Beyond. He has been practicing meditation and yoga since 1996, learning from teachers from the Tibetan Buddhist, Kripalu, Ashtanga, and Iyengar streams. Along the way he has trained as a yoga therapist and an Ayurvedic consultant, and maintained a private practice in Toronto from 2007 to 2015. Matthews currently facilitates programming for yoga trainings internationally, focusing on yoga philosophy, culture, and the social psychology of healthy communities. In all subject areas, he encourages students to explore how yoga practice can resist the psychic and material dominance of neoliberalism, and the quickening pace of environmental destruction.

This is Matthew’s second time on the podcast, if you missed the first conversation check out the show notes links. Kathryn and Matthew talked about Matthew’s new book Practice and All is Coming, Cult Dynamics, and Healing in Yoga and Beyond, what it was like to write the book and what he learned along the way speaking to dozens of Ashtanga Yoga practitioners and teachers. Matthew talks about his own experience as a two-time cult survivor, what cults are and how they can be identified. He also shares some really valuable information about scope of practice, power structures and sensitivity, which are very important topics for yoga and movement teachers to be talking about.
