Dane Woodland is a personal trainer, public speaker, and coach. He works with a variety of people as they pursue their goals, with a focus on creating safe spaces in fitness for those who may typically feel excluded. Having initiated a gender transition in 2014, Dane has participated in fitness and sport as both a woman and a man, and offers a unique perspective on how gender can influence such experiences. Dane identifies as a feminist and delivered a talk at TEDxStJohns entitled: “One Lifetime, Two Perspectives: How Male Privilege Made Me a Feminist” in 2016.
Kathryn and Dane talk about a variety of topics ranging from feminism to strength and conditioning training. Dane speaks about his TED talk, and about what it’s like to have lived in the world as a woman and as a man. He talks about his experience strength coaching retired individuals, and how strength and fitness training can make a world of difference in a person’s life. He also gives some ideas of how teachers and coaches might approach teaching functional movement to an aging population. Kathryn and Dane get to nerd out on certain aspects of strength training, they talk about deadlifts and how strengthening the body has a profound effect on functional daily tasks.
